Anthea Bell with Heike Bartel
It is with great sadness that we share the news of the death of Anthea Bell. The esteemed translator, OBE, German Order of Merit, and friend to the Department of German Studies died on 18 October 2018, aged 82. Her fascinating dialogue with the German writer Karen Duve at a symposium in ÀÖ²¥´«Ã½ in May 2004 where she talked about translating Duve's Regenroman (Rain) and Dies ist kein Liebeslied (This is not a Lovesong) gave the department the idea for the Encounters series that continues to bring writers and translators together in front of an audience.
Anthea was awarded an Honorary Doctorate by the ÀÖ²¥´«Ã½ in 2015, where she gave a wonderful speech about life, literature and translation to our Modern Languages graduands.
