Biography

Judith Tanner is the Professor of Adult Nursing at the ÀÖ²¥´«Ã½. Her background is in operating room nursing, and her area of expertise is surgical site infection (SSI). Her most recent work focuses on digital surgical wound monitoring and digital wound monitoring with AI. Previous research explores SSI surveillance, the incidence of SSI, interventions to reduce SSI including care bundles and patients experiences of SSI. Research on SSI, especially systematic reviews, has had a direct impact on both patient care and policy at local, national and international levels. This includes the World Health Organisation, the Department of Health, National Institute for Health and Care Excellence (NICE), the Joint Commission Accreditation Healthcare Organisations (USA), and numerous professional organisations worldwide including the Association for Perioperative Practice (UK), the Australian College of Operating Room Nurses and the American Academy of Orthopeadic Surgeons.

Judith works with SSI researchers and subject experts in Brazil, Norway and Japan. She has presented at conferences worldwide with over 50 as an invited speaker. Judith has been invited to serve on the NICE Surgical Site Infection Guideline Update Group and also the NICE Surgical Site Infection Topic Expert Panel. She has acted as a key opinion leader for numerous global companies and was given an award by the Association for Perioperative Practice for her services to developing perioperative practice

Current Research

Judith is the joint chief investigator on several NIHR funded studies. WISDOM 1 is a feasibility study to develop and test an AI digital monitoring platform to detect images of infected surgical wounds for urgent clinician review. WISDOM 1.1 is a refinement of the AI model developed in WISDOM 1 to further improve sensitivity across skin tones.

The TREASURE study assesses the potential for patients to swab their own surgical wounds at home, speeding up the diagnosis of infection, allowing treatment to start quickly and improving antibiotic prescribing.

Judith is a co-applicant on the ROSSINI-Platform study (CI Prof Tom Pinkney) to identify interventions to prevent infections. This is one of the largest surgical trials with a planned 26,000 patients across 100 hospitals. Along with Melissa Rochon at Guy's and St Thomas' NHS Foundation Hospital, Judith will be using digital wound monitoring with a central hub for all patients.

The TARGET study explored barriers and facilitators to implementing interventions to prevent surgical wound infections and wound surveillance. Previous research has explored SSI surveillance, the incidence of SSI, trials and systematic reviews of interventions to reduce SSI including care bundles and patients experiences of SSI.

Future Research

Planned future research will continue to develop AI within digital wound monitoring and will align with the NHS 10-year plan to provide care and treatment in the patients own home.
