Biography
Professor Georgios Spyropoulos is a leading expert in Greek and Roman art and archaeology, with an outstanding portfolio of research publications that includes nine books currently in print and three further monographs at an advanced stage of completion, alongside a substantial body of scholarly articles and excavation reports. He is Deputy Head of the Ephorate of Antiquities for Corinthia of the Hellenic Ministry of Culture and Director of its Department of Archaeological Museums and Sites. He directs the major international transdisciplinary Lechaion Harbor and Settlement Land Project (LHSLP) - the western port of ancient - medieval Corinth, undertaken in collaboration with California State University Long Beach under the auspices of the American School of Classical Studies at Athens and the Hellenic Ministry of Culture. He also directs fieldwork projects at the Mycenaean (Late Bronze Age) cemeteries in Corinthia.
Professor Spyropoulos is a Visiting Professor at Sapienza University of Rome. His international affiliations include the J. Paul Getty Museum, Princeton University, Johns Hopkins University, Harvard University, the University of Oxford, Coe College, and the University of Pittsburgh. He maintains long-standing collaboration with the American School of Classical Studies at Athens - the preeminent US overseas research centre - which has excavated in Corinth and Corinthia for over a century.
Professor Spyropoulos holds a PhD in Classical Archaeology from Philipps Universität Marburg, preceded by an MPhil in Archaeologyand an MA in Classics from King's College London (with courses also taken - with special permission - from University College London). His academic foundation was established with a BA in Archaeology and History of Art from the National and Kapodistrian University of Athens. In addition to his core classical training, Professor Spyropoulos has continued to broaden his intellectual scope, most recently completing a Diploma in Jewish Philosophy, History and Wisdom at the Jerusalem Aish HaTorah College of Jewish Studies.
He is a member of the Managing Committee of the Centre for Spartan and Peloponnesian Studies at the ÀÖ²¥´«Ã½.
