Biography of Samuel Mellish (1634-1707)
Samuel was the eldest son of William Mellish (1605-1667) of Stepney and Doncaster, and his wife Martha, née Goldsmith, and a grandson of Edward Mellish of London. He was baptised in the parish of St Dunstan, Stepney.
Samuel moved from London to become a barrister-at-law in Doncaster, Yorkshire.
Family
In around 1670 he married Joan (d 1708/9, aged 75), daughter of Thomas Prowse and widow of Tobiah Harvey, citizen and vintner of London (who died before 1663). Joan had three children from her first marriage:
- Tobiah Harvey (1659-1708), barrister, of the Inner Temple, and Womersley, Yorkshire. m. Ann Holbridge
- John Harvey (1661-)
- Samuel Harvey
Samuel and Joan had:
- Joseph Mellish (1675-1733)
- Martha (d 1753), married in 1686 Daniel Baker (d 1727) of Penn, Buckinghamshire. Martha and Daniel had 17 children including sons Daniel, Samuel, John and James, unmarried daughters Elizabeth, Barbara, Maria Josepha, Joanna and Dorothy, and married daughters Ann Mead and Martha Faure.
