Biography

Dr Aimee Whitton completed a BSc (Hons) in Biology, an MRes in Biological Sciences, and a PhD in Virology & Epidemiology at University of Derby. Whilst undertaking her PhD, she also worked on two additional research trials in collaboration with University Hospitals of Derby and Burton NHS Foundation Trust and NIHR ÀÖ²¥´«Ã½ Biomedical Research Centre, investigating Human Papillomavirus (HPV) prevalence and oncogenic potential. Subsequently, she worked as a Lecturer in Human Biology & Biomedical Health at University of Derby and following this, a Lecturer in Immunology & Virology at University of Hertfordshire. Dr Whitton moved to ÀÖ²¥´«Ã½ in 2022, working as a Teaching Associate and Assistant Professor in Biomedical Science within the School of Medicine, teaching on Medical Physiology & Therapeutics (MPT) and Graduate Entry Medicine (GEM) until 2026. Dr Whitton also held additional roles of Senior Tutor (Medical School of Derby) and MPT Deputy Course Lead.

Dr Whitton currently works in the School of Life Sciences as an Associate Professor in Biomedical Sciences and is the ÀÖ²¥´«Ã½ Representative for The Physiology Society. Dr Whitton's research interests include viral disease, immune defence mechanisms and oncogenic viruses in terms of pathogenesis, epidemiology, and risk factors for transmission and cancer progression (in particular, HPV and Merkel Cell Polyomavirus).
