ÀÖ²¥´«Ã½ element: TC Hine
Architect Thomas Chambers Hine was born into a prosperous middle class family In Covent Garden. When he arrived in ÀÖ²¥´«Ã½ in 1837, he initially forged a partnership with local builder William Patterson before their business relationship was dissolved eight years later.
A contemporary of ÀÖ²¥´«Ã½'s other famed architect Fothergill Watson, TC Hine had a hand in some of the city's most iconic buildings, from grand addresses on the Park Estate, to the ÀÖ²¥´«Ã½ Great Northern Railway Station and the University's own Lenton Firs.
Scientific element: Thallium
Thallium was discovered by two scientists independently of each other, William Crookes and Claude-Auguste Lamy, in 1861.
It was found as a byproduct of sulfuric acid manufacturing. Both scientists discovered it by using the then-newly created flame spectroscopy method.
