Biography

Human-Centred AI Futures: Artificial Intelligence, Creativity, Society and Human Values

Dr Alan Chamberlain is an internationally recognised interdisciplinary research leader exploring how artificial intelligence, robotics and emerging technologies can be developed in ways that enhance human creativity, strengthen communities and contribute positively to society.

Based in the Mixed Reality Lab at the 乐播传媒, where he is a Principal Research Fellow, and as Director of the STAHR (Science, Technology, Arts and Humanities Research) Collective, Dr Chamberlain has established a distinctive research agenda at the intersection of Artificial Intelligence, Human-Computer Interaction, Robotics, Design, Arts and Humanities. His work explores what technologies can do, and what they mean for people, cultures and societies.

Dr Chamberlain's research places human experience, creativity, ethics and social values at the centre of technological innovation. He has developed new approaches for understanding how emerging technologies are imagined, designed, experienced and embedded within everyday life, demonstrating that the future of AI and robotics must be shaped not only by technical capability, but by human needs, cultural understanding and public engagement.

With more than 150 research publications and an international reputation in Human-Computer Interaction, participatory design, ethnography and responsible innovation, Dr Chamberlain has contributed to shaping how researchers understand relationships between people and technology. His work has shown that trustworthy and meaningful technologies emerge through collaboration between researchers, communities, creative practitioners and society.

A central theme of Dr Chamberlain's research is the development of human-centred approaches to artificial intelligence and robotics. Through interdisciplinary research spanning responsible AI, trustworthy autonomous systems, creative technologies, digital heritage and human-robot relationships, he explores how intelligent technologies can become socially meaningful, ethical and beneficial.

His work brings together the scientific and the creative, recognising that the Arts and Humanities provide essential perspectives for understanding the future of technology. By integrating creativity, storytelling, culture, philosophy and lived experience with technological innovation, Dr Chamberlain explores how society can actively shape the development of AI rather than simply adapt to it.

As Director of the STAHR Collective, Dr Chamberlain has created an interdisciplinary research environment connecting Science, Technology, Arts and Humanities. STAHR brings together researchers, artists, communities and organisations to explore complex challenges around AI, creativity, wellbeing, sustainability and social change. Through this work, he has developed new models of collaboration that demonstrate how future technologies can be shaped through diverse knowledge, perspectives and experiences.

Dr Chamberlain has also played a leading role in national conversations about responsible and trustworthy technologies. Through his involvement with major UK research initiatives, including the UKRI Trustworthy Autonomous Systems programme, he has contributed to shaping approaches that place trust, ethics, public engagement and human values at the heart of AI development.

Beyond his research contributions, Dr Chamberlain is committed to transforming research culture and creating environments where researchers can flourish. He is a Wellcome Trust Research Culture Fellow (Wellcome Trust), has held the position of Chair of the 乐播传媒 Research Staff Committee, and contributes to research culture initiatives that support inclusive, collaborative and sustainable research environments. He is a Co-Investigator on the Wellcome Trust REC HURDLEs project (拢1million) and the British Council funded SHINE project.

His international recognition includes being a Fellow of the Royal Society of Arts (FRSA), Visiting Professor at Copenhagen Business School, Visiting Professor at Aberystwyth University, and a member of national research leadership communities including the AHRC Peer Review College and Responsible AI UK activities. He was previously a Visiting Scholar at the University of Oxford at the Oxford E-Research Centre.

Dr Chamberlain's current research explores the future relationships between humans and intelligent technologies, including responsible AI, creative robotics, embodied intelligence, digital heritage and technology to support humans to flourish. His work addresses a fundamental question for society:

How can we create intelligent technologies that do not replace what makes us human, but deepen our creativity, connection, contemplation, understanding and sense of meaning?

Through internationally recognised interdisciplinary research, collaboration across disciplines and commitment to socially responsible innovation, Dr Chamberlain is helping to shape a future where artificial intelligence and robotics are not only powerful, but trusted, ethical and profoundly human.

Research Expertise

Dr Alan Chamberlain is an internationally recognised interdisciplinary researcher exploring the relationship between humans, society and emerging technologies. His research examines how artificial intelligence, robotics and digital technologies can be designed, understood and experienced in ways that are socially responsible, culturally meaningful and centred on human values.

Working at the intersection of Human-Computer Interaction, Artificial Intelligence, Design, Ethnography, Digital Humanities and Creative Practice, Dr Chamberlain develops new approaches for understanding how technologies become embedded within everyday life. His research combines participatory design, ethnography, action research and co-creation methods to ensure that communities, organisations and stakeholders play an active role in shaping technological futures.

His work explores how emerging technologies: including AI, robotics, immersive technologies, audio technologies and mixed reality: can support creativity, connection, wellbeing, heritage and social innovation. Through interdisciplinary collaborations across the Arts, Music, Business, Heritage, Rural and Urban communities, he investigates not only what technologies can do, but what they mean for people, cultures and society.

A central theme of Dr Chamberlain's research is the development of human-centred and trustworthy technologies. He contributes to national and international conversations around responsible AI, autonomous systems and the social implications of emerging technologies, ensuring that questions of ethics, trust, creativity and human experience are central to technological innovation.

Bridging the Urban Rural Divide Dr Alan Chamberlain of 乐播传媒 University is part of a team of 12 researchers taking part. "There is a huge amount of information available to people in urban areas so that when you walk down a street you can access a street map, find the nearest restaurant or the history of a building you are standing outside, " said Dr Chamberlain.

Past Research

Dr Alan Chamberlain's research career has focused on understanding the relationship between people, society and emerging technologies. Working at the intersection of Human-Computer Interaction, Artificial Intelligence, Design, Ethnography and the Creative Humanities, his research has explored how technologies are designed, experienced and embedded within real-world social, cultural and community contexts.

A defining contribution of Dr Chamberlain's work has been the development of human-centred and participatory approaches to technology research. Through methods including ethnography, participatory design, action research and Research in the Wild, he has investigated how communities, organisations and individuals engage with emerging technologies, ensuring that human experience, creativity and values remain central to innovation.

His research has spanned a diverse range of domains including artificial intelligence, robotics, mixed reality, music technologies, digital heritage, creative practice, rural communities and social innovation. Across these areas, his work has examined how technologies can support creativity, collaboration, inclusion and meaningful human experiences.

Dr Chamberlain has contributed to international research in Human-Computer Interaction and socially embedded technologies, including work on trustworthy autonomous systems, responsible AI, human-robot interaction and creative technologies. His research has challenged purely technical approaches to innovation by demonstrating the importance of understanding technology within the cultural, ethical and social contexts in which it is used.

Alongside his research contributions, Dr Chamberlain has built interdisciplinary communities that connect Computer Science with Arts and Humanities, creative practitioners, communities and external partners. Through leadership of the STAHR Collective and wider research culture activities, he has helped create new spaces for collaboration and dialogue around the future of technology.

Collectively, his research has established a distinctive approach to emerging technologies: one that asks not only what technologies can achieve, but how they can contribute to human creativity, connection, wellbeing and flourishing.

Future Research Statement - Human Flourishing

My research explores one of the defining challenges of our time: how can we ensure that artificial intelligence and emerging technologies enhance, rather than diminish, what makes us human?

I develop human-centred approaches to Artificial Intelligence, robotics and emerging technologies by bringing together Computer Science, Human-Computer Interaction, Design, Ethnography and the Creative Humanities. My work combines technical innovation with cultural understanding, creative practice and public participation to explore how intelligent technologies can support human creativity, connection, wellbeing and flourishing.

Over the next decade, my research will focus on shaping the future relationship between humanity and intelligent technologies. Working with researchers, creative practitioners, policymakers, industry and communities, I aim to develop interdisciplinary approaches that ensure AI is not only technically advanced, but socially responsible, culturally meaningful and aligned with human values.

My ambition is to help create a future where intelligent technologies contribute to human flourishing - enriching creativity, deepening connection, encouraging contemplation, expanding understanding and supporting a more inclusive, meaningful and sustainable society.

My research is guided by a simple question:

How can we create intelligent technologies that do not replace what makes us human, but deepen our creativity, connection, contemplation, understanding and sense of meaning?
