Congratulations and a very warm welcome to the Department of Mechanical, Materials and Manufacturing Engineering (M3). We are looking forward to meeting you soon. As a new member of this vibrant community, you will be taught and supported by leading academics and industry professionals who are committed to inspirational teaching. We hope you have an excellent experience during your degree. If you are unsure about anything in these early weeks do not be afraid to ask questions or seek help from staff.
What you need to do before you arrive

Review the IT equipment recommendations
You will need a laptop or device to participate in lectures and complete online learning and teaching activities. Whether you already have a device or are considering purchasing new IT equipment for your university studies, please check the PDM specific requirements on the department of M3's recommended IT equipment guide, in particular the device will need to be able to run the software used and have a pen-enabled touch screen.
We would suggest you use an MS Windows 11 system for ease of access to our commonly used systems, and to use some of the specialist engineering software for your studies. We would also suggest your device should have a microphone and webcam to interact with staff and students during online support sessions and tutorials.
Microsoft 365 is available free of charge to all students for the duration of their studies and specialist software is available in our on-campus computer rooms and at any time and from anywhere via our Engineering Virtual Desktop.
There are computer rooms available on campus and a laptop loan service if you have a device awaiting repair, but both are offered on a first come first served basis. All students who might struggle with financing IT equipment can apply for support via the Hardship Fund.

Complete the faculty health and safety induction and book a slot to collect your Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) and department hoodie
All new students in the Faculty of Engineering must complete the health and safety induction. Once completed you will be able to follow a link to book a time slot during Welcome Week to collect the lab PPE required for your course along with your department hoodie.
We recommend that you wait until your induction timetables are available (from 26th August), before booking your collection slot so you can choose a time that fits in with your department events and activities.
