Systems that are not supported by the university

Wi-Fi networks do not support most personal printers. You will find printers in university-managed halls and buildings on campus. 

We cannot ensure the following applications will work due to network limitations and restrictions:

• Websites external to the ÀÖ²¥´«Ã½
• Voice or video chat
• Text-based chat (QQ, NJStar, Yahoo, AIM or iMessage)
• VOIP (apart from applications listed as fully supported)
• Online gaming (not all games and online services may be accessible)
• Games consoles
• Streaming media and 'Catch-up' TV websites such as Spotify, BBC iPlayer, 4OD etc.
    

Activity that is banned

• Sending emails via SMTP except through the University SMTP server (smtp.nottingham.ac.uk)
• Bit-Torrent or similar peer to peer (P2P) applications (including LimeWire, Transmit, DC++, µTorrent etc), or any file-sharing capabilities of the operating system
• File-sharing websites such as RapidShare and MegaUpload (including paid-for and subscription services). These sites are often used for sharing copyrighted content and it is impossible to detect the difference between content types
• Using a Virtual Private Network (VPN) except those to other ÀÖ²¥´«Ã½ campuses at Ningbo or Malaysia or where prior agreement has been reached with Digital and Technology Services
• Using anonymous proxy services or other services designed to bypass these restrictions
• Operating a computer or device which provides services to other users, such as a file server or any network equipment or software designed to allow multiple computers to share a single connection such as Apple's Time Capsule, routers (wired or wireless), switches, hubs and printers. Exceptions to this will be made for hardware provided by Information Services or the University
• Using two network connections at once, for example a 4G USB modem as well as a wired connection. Exceptions may be granted for hardware provided by Digital and Technology Services or the University

 An organisation takes part in eduroam by being a ‘Home’ institution, a ‘Visited’ institution, or both.

• A ‘Home’ institution provides authentication for its users when they wish to access internet facilities at a participating ‘Visited’ organisation
• A ‘Visited’ institution permits members of other organisations to use its internet facilities whilst on site using their 'Home' institution credentials. This typically allows internet access only.

The ÀÖ²¥´«Ã½ participates as both a ‘Home’ and ‘Visited’ institution.

To connect to eduroam, please ensure your device has been set up correctly before your visit. Your local IT support team should be able to assist you with this. 

• You may need to enter your username and password to connect to eduroam if these credentials are not already cached on your device
• The user credentials on your device must identify your organisation. As an example, xyz@abc.ac.uk would identify user xyz from university abc  
• When you use wi-fi, you must adhere to our IT Policies. 

 UoN-guest is a free Wi-Fi service and is available to: 

• Members of the public visiting campus
• Short term visitors
• Conference delegates
• Contractors and commercial partners  

Connecting to UoN-guest 

If you are on campus and within range of the guest wireless network:

1. Open your device Wi-Fi settings
2. Select UoN-guest from the list of available networks

New visitors 

1. Connect to the UoN-guest wireless network
2. The guest registration page will open automatically
3. Select Register as a guest to create a temporary visitor account
4. Enter: 

• Your first name
• Your last name
• Your email address
• Click Register to complete registration

Your account will be created and your username and passcode will be displayed on screen. These details will also be sent to the email address you provided.

Guest Wi-Fi access lasts for 7 days.

Existing visitor accounts

1. Connect to the UoN-guest wireless network
2. When the guest login page appears, sign in using:

• Your username
• Your passcode

University staff and students

Current University staff and students should connect using eduroam instead.

UoN-guest is an open network and does not provide encryption for traffic transmitted or received by connected devices. Security for connections made using the UoN-guest network remains your responsibility and the service is used at your own risk. Please do not enter passwords online when using this network. When you use wi-fi, you must adhere to our IT Policies.
