Street-Names, Planning and Public Policy

What is this project about?

The INS, in partnership with GeoPlace LLP, worked with Street Naming and Numbering Officers to explore the ways in which historical place-name material can inform and support modern street-naming decisions. Researchers focused on four authorities: Derbyshire Dales, Mid Sussex, Plymouth, and Cheshire East, each chosen for their diverse rural and urban settings with differing policy needs. 

Our researchers at the INS worked closely with auhtortities to produce reports using the historical and etymological evidence of existing place names in their regions. These reports incorporated information from English Place-Name Society Surveys, historical maps (including tithe maps), and dialect research. Findings were passed to authorities, providing them with themes, patterns, locally disinct terms, and guidance on how to approach street-names in the future. 

This project ran for ten months and ended in 2024, with the findings and traning present to GEOPlace and SNNOs (Street-Naming and Numbering Officers) in 2025.
