Congratulations and a very warm welcome to the Department of Electrical and Electronic Engineering. We are looking forward to meeting you soon. As a new member of this vibrant community, you will be taught and supported by leading academics and industry professionals who are committed to inspirational teaching. We hope you have an excellent experience during your degree. If you are unsure about anything in these early weeks do not be afraid to ask questions or seek help from staff.
What you need to do before you arrive

Review the IT equipment recommendations
You will need access to a laptop or device to participate in lessons and complete online learning. Whether you already have a device, or are considering purchasing new IT equipment for your university studies, please check our Department IT equipment advice page and the minimum specification recommended by Digital and Technology Services.
We would strongly encourage the use of an MS Windows 11 based system for ease of access to our commonly used systems, and to use some of the specialist engineering software for your studies. We would also suggest your device should have a microphone and webcam, as you may need to interact with staff and other students via video calls.
You do not need to purchase any software; Microsoft 365 is available free of charge to all students. Some specialist engineering software will also be available for you to install on your own device free of charge under university specific license arrangements.
There are some computer rooms available on campus and a laptop loan service but both are offered on a first come first served basis. All students (home, EU, and international) who might struggle with financing IT equipment can apply for support via the Hardship Fund.

Complete the faculty health and safety induction and book a slot to collect your department hoodie
All new students in the Faculty of Engineering must complete the health and safety induction. Once completed you will be able to follow a link to book a time slot during Welcome Week to collect any PPE required for your course and your department hoodie.
We recommend that you wait until your induction timetables are available (from 26th August), before booking your collection slot so you can choose a time that fits in with your department events and activities.

Find out more about IET membership
The department will cover the cost of student membership to the IET (The Institution of Engineering and Technology), the professional body that accredits our degrees, for the duration of your course. The IET application process will form part of your induction during Welcome.
