We often get asked about ways you can connect with peers on your course. The following activities can help you meet others on your course and in your department to build connections.
Peer mentoring for undergraduate students
Our peer mentoring scheme matches you with a second or final year student mentor from your subject area. Your mentor can share their experiences and help you with settling into student life, such as:
- how to find the library
- how to get to grips with university study
- where to get the best coffee on campus
Why have a peer mentor?
Starting university can be daunting, and this is completely normal. A peer mentor can offer a friendly face and ear, a voice of experience and insider tips, and can guide you to further sources of support. You may wish to become a peer mentor yourself in second year. It’s a great addition to any CV.
The Education and Student Experience (ESE) team will email you at the start of September with a peer mentor request form. The form will allow you to indicate your preferred mentor. Our mentors have provided short profiles, and we'll pair you with a mentor based on your preferences before introducing you during your first week
If you do not sign up for a peer mentor, you will not be assigned one.
Meeting your mentor
If you have signed up to have a Peer Mentor, you will have the opportunity to meet your mentor during your Department Party on Tuesday 22 September. Details will be available on your department schedule.
Look out for an email from the Education and Student Experience (ESE) team with details of who your mentor is and when you will meet with them.

Social events
Department of Classics and Archaeology events
It can be beneficial to see people from the department casually, outside of a lecture or seminar room. Look out for invites from the Department of Classics and Archaeology, where you can socialise with students and staff over refreshments.
Postgraduate socials (PGT students only)
Each year, we organise a range of social events just for master’s students. These are perfect for bringing together postgraduates from across the Faculty of Arts. They’re a great chance to unwind, enjoy some food and drinks, and get to know others in a relaxed, friendly setting.
