Undergraduate welcome

Congratulations on securing your place to study with us. The school is busy planning for a new first year of undergraduate students across our different degree programmes. You will be part of a large and diverse geographical community.  

We are looking forward to welcoming you to our friendly and supportive school and are planning a range of activities to help you meet other students and members of staff. 

During Welcome Week, we will introduce you to the support services in the university and people in the school who are here to help you settle and assist you during your degree. This will include our Senior Tutor, our Disability Liaison Officer and your Course Director.

Getting started

In your first week, you will also meet your tutor and your tutorial group. This group is explicitly designed to help you settle in and adjust to studying at university.  You will meet regularly throughout the year. 

As well as this you’ll meet committee members from our Geography Society. GeogSoc is the society for geography students, and regularly organises social activities, including guest speakers, wellbeing events and ‘Globall’, the annual summer ball. Founded in 1923, today GeogSoc boasts approximately 400 members, making it one of the largest student bodies in the university. 

During Welcome Week we will be holding an information session about our first-year field trip to the Lake District, which takes place in two groups (10-13 October or 13-16 October) for our BA Geography and BSc Geography students only. More information on the field trip (including which group you’ll be in) will be provided at the start of term, but please feel free to contact the field trip convenor (Professor George Swann) if you have any concerns about the trip and/or have any medical conditions which you wish to discuss. 

Your timetable

A timetable for Welcome Week (which is w/c 21 September) will be available in early September, and a personalised teaching timetable will be available to you from w/c 14 September. Please be aware that teaching begins in the week beginning Monday 28 September. 

Before the start of term, we would recommend keeping up to date with news and current affairs. Please be reassured that we don’t expect you to buy any books. Reading lists will be provided for each module once teaching begins at the start of term. The majority of material will be accessible electronically with some additional materials in our campus libraries.
