As a student, you will need to make use of computers, calculators and a mobile phone. See below for guidance on suitable devices.
Computers / laptops and mobile phones
You can use a desktop computer but a laptop is recommended as it can be brought to class (e.g. for coding sessions).
It is preferable for students to have their own device; however, if you need to you can have the loan of a laptop from the Laptop Loan and Repair Service from the university.
The university’s Digital and Technology Service has provided general digital equipment advice on the Prepare your laptop and mobile phone webpage.
There are also computer rooms available on campus.
Calculators
While you can use any calculator during your studies, there is a list of acceptable calculators for closed-book examinations. The invigilator will check the type of calculator you are using during an exam.
We recommend buying a scientific calculator from the following list:
- Aurora AX-582
- Casio FX82 family
- Casio FX83 family
- Casio FX85 family
- Casio FX350 family
- Casio FX570 family
- Casio FX 991 family
- Sharp EL-531 family
- Texas Instruments TI-30 family
- Texas BA II+ family
You can buy some of these models at any stationary store or a large supermarket. The Casio FX-83GTX has been a popular model amongst students.
