Your health is important and you never know when you might need medical advice.

We recommend making time during your first week at ÀÖ²¥´«Ã½ to register with a local GP surgery so that you have access to a doctor.  

You can register with a surgery of your own choice, but if you're moving to ÀÖ²¥´«Ã½ for longer than six months, we recommend registering with one of the services outlined below. These recommendations are based on your term-time address.

Before you can register with a local surgery

  • You will need your term-time address and postcode - if you are living in university halls, you can find your address and postcode here.  
  • Your term-time address will need to be in the catchment area for the surgery for you to be eligible. Use the links below to check your postcode and see if your address falls within the surgery's catchment area.

Where can I register? 

If your university address is in ÀÖ²¥´«Ã½ city (which includes our University Park and Jubilee campuses), you will be able to register with the ÀÖ²¥´«Ã½ Health Service (UNHS). 

If your university address is in Kegworth (Sutton Bonington Campus), you will be able to register with the Orchard Surgery.

If your address is in Derby city or not in the ÀÖ²¥´«Ã½ city or Sutton Bonington/Kegworth catchment areas, you will be able to register with a local doctor. 

 

Vaccinations

Before arriving at university, we recommend that all students check they are up to date with the vaccinations recommended for people entering higher education. 

Living, studying and socialising with lots of new people can increase the spread of some infectious diseases, particularly during the first few months of university. 

You should make sure you are protected against: 

  • MenACWY (meningococcal groups A, C, W and Y) 

  • MMR (measles, mumps and rubella) 

  • HPV (human papillomavirus), if you are eligible 

MenB vaccination programme 2026 

NHS England has introduced a one-off vaccination programme in 2026 for new undergraduate students.

If you are under 25 and entering higher education for the first time in autumn 2026, you may be eligible for a free MenB vaccination. 

The MenB vaccine consists of two doses, with the second dose at least 28 days after the first. We encourage eligible students to receive this vaccination before arriving at university. If you can only receive the first dose before arriving, the second dose can be acquired from a participating pharmacy once you arrive.

International students

All students entering the UK from overseas should register with a doctor in the UK. 

When you register with UNHS, you will be offered the same recommended vaccinations listed above. To find out more and to view this information in another language, read our vaccination information leaflet (pdf).  

If you are coming to the UK for more than six months from certain countries, you will need a medical certificate to prove you don’t currently have infectious tuberculosis (TB) before your visa application can be considered. For more information, visit the
