We often get asked about making friends at university. The following activities can help you meet others on your course and build connections.

Especially if you are moving home from far away or another country/culture, not knowing anyone, this can be scary from anyone. There is nothing to be ashamed of.

The school organises regular events across the year to help students get to know your cohort and build a close community of computer scientists.

Some examples include:

Previous events, organised by the school in previous years:
  • AdaFest, in celebration of the life of Ada Lovelace and to promote the amazing current work by current female staff and PhD students.
  • Diwali celebration
  • Christmas celebration
  • Chinese New Year
  • LGBTQIA+ History Month
  • Mental Health Week
  • and many more

Postgraduate Chatty Wednesdays
  • On the final Wednesday, every month, we plan a relaxed monthly social event for MSc Computer Science, Human-Computer Interaction, Cyber Physical Systems, and Data Science students to meet and connect. Postgraduate research students also welcome to attend.
  • Chatty Wednesdays is designed as a regular series of events for postgraduate students to get to know each other, play some board games, and have some food and drinks.
  • Your academic guides, peer guides, and PGT Director will also be invited to chat and offer support with your studies.
  • Plus a 10-minute talk and 1-to-1 Q&A by a member of staff from the school or wider university support service.

Undergraduate First Year Discord Channel

We have a Computer Science First Year Discord channel, which is run by our students for our students.

Students' Union Groups

The university Students’ Union has a variety of different societies. It is home to more than 300+ societies and over 75 sports clubs, as well as student media groups, student-run services and student Networks. So, there’s guaranteed to be something for everyone. This is where you’ll find all our activities, explore our societies and sports clubs, and become a member of one of our groups.

We are delighted that a number of our students have created three Computer Science Societies. These are groups run by students, for students; and joining is a great way to meet and get to know your fellow students outside of taught seminars, labs and lectures.
