The Academic Legal Skills Team

The Academic Legal Skills Team provides specialist support for all students in the School of Law to develop the academic skills required to excel in their studies and in their future careers. We utilise a range of large and small group sessions, one-to-one consultations, carefully curated learning materials and Moodle pages for each year group and programme. 

Our academic skills provision is front-loaded on undergraduate law degrees, with six fundamental and foundational academic skills being the focus of semester one of first year:

• Pillar I: Accessing Primary Sources
• Pillar II: Study Management & Revision Strategies
• Pillar III: Answering Problem Questions
• Pillar IV: Using Secondary sources
• Pillar V: Critical Perspectives
• Pillar VI: Essay Writing

These ‘pillars’ are taught across Skills lectures attached to the core year one module, Introduction to Law and Legal Theory. Students in years two and three can drop into non-timetabled, small group ‘refresher’ sessions on academic legal skills, depending upon their individual needs. These are held regularly during term-time.

At postgraduate level, the six ‘pillars’ are taught in self-contained workshops in semester one. Postgraduate students also benefit from a range of additional sessions dedicated to the needs of students studying on an advanced law degree.

The Academic Legal Skills Team offers students the opportunity to book a Legal Skills Consultation via email. Students can request an individual consultation or, where appropriate, a small group session may be held. Consultations must be booked in advance and are subject to availability. They last up to 30 minutes and can take place either in person or online, depending upon the wishes of the student.

These valuable sessions can deal with a range of topics, including support with dissertations, general academic skills, referencing or making the most of assessment feedback.
