Welfare support

Who can help?

Alongside the welfare and academic support provided centrally, there are dedicated support structures within the school, faculty and at university level to help you settle in:

  • Senior tutor team, including multiple deputy senior tutors specialising in various areas of teaching and engagement.
  • Here For You system: The Here For You system provides a range of support within the school. Students can seek support by emailing the Senior Tutor Inbox and arranging an appointment with the Student Support Coordinator. Students will also take part in group tutorials with an Academic Guide within the school and can arrange one-to-one meetings to discuss any academic concerns. In addition, all students have the opportunity to meet with Peer Guides. These are experienced students who can offer support and advice on all aspects of University life.
  • Small-group teaching: Undergraduates work in small tutorial groups, allowing you to develop a strong relationship with academic tutors and tutorial group peers.
  • Peer support: You will always have access to student peer guides for help and advice. In addition, you will be allocated a peer mentor during your first semester. This will be an upper-year student who, if you want, can help you settle into university life and adjust to the study of law.
  • School Disability Liaison Officers to provide support for students with disabilities.
  • The Faculty of Social Sciences Wellbeing team has a range of knowledge and expertise to help support you during your time here at the School of Law.
  • The University Counselling Service provides a year-round service for all students, which include counselling sessions, workshops, self-help resources and they can signpost to further information
  • The Academic Legal Skills Team provides specialist support for all students in the School of Law to develop the academic skills required to excel in their studies. The support includes a range of large and small group sessions, one-to-one consultations (subject to availability), and carefully curated learning materials and Moodle pages for each year group and programme.

Helping you find your feet

We are committed to ensuring every student thrives from day one, providing tailored support to help you reach your full potential. Whether you need peer guidance on tutorials or specialised assistance for a disability or learning difference, we’ve got you covered. Our academic staff offer dedicated support to our students with their studies. Outside of teaching, staff have availability for students to get advice on individual modules, as well as their studies.

Our amazing student societies and HealthyU (ÀÖ²¥´«Ã½’s Health Improvement Campaign) will be present at a range of key welcome events, creating a supportive and inclusive environment during your first week.

In addition to our very own Legal Skills Team in the School of Law, the Academic Language and Communication Skills (ALACS) team can also support you with vital academic skills.

No one's first language is academic language

The ALACS team recognise this and offer a wide range of in-depth, practice-based courses on vital skills, including writing successful assignments and dissertations, criticality, academic integrity, understanding feedback, effective presentation and discussion skills, and courses to develop important language skills such as grammar, vocabulary, pronunciation or social conversation - all delivered by experienced and qualified tutors. They also offer subject-specific courses rooted in thorough research on what you need to succeed in your studies and future career.

For individual support, you can book their very popular one-to-one consultations

They are here for you all-year round from registration to graduation.

Academic Culture Shock: a support guide for international students

In 2022-2023, we produced an online resource to help international students cope with the experience of culture shock in their studies.

The resource is made up of a series of connected webpages, with recordings of student interviews giving an account of how they coped with academic differences when studying in the UK and particularly at the School of Law in ÀÖ²¥´«Ã½. We made this resource specifically for international postgraduate students in the School of Law, but we hope that all international students will find support and encouragement here, whether undergraduate or postgraduate.
